Job Title: Staff Software Engineer
Location: Remote
Duration: Direct Hire
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will serve as a principal technical leader within the technology organization, responsible for defining architectural evolution, technical strategy, and engineering standards across our digital healthcare platforms. This role sits within the core product engineering organization and operates as a highly technical individual contributor (IC).
Unlike traditional management paths, this role focuses on technical leadership, architecture, and organizational influence. You will serve as a force multiplier across multiple engineering squads, tackling complex distributed-systems challenges and helping ensure our API-driven platform is secure, scalable, and resilient. You will combine deep expertise in Ruby on Rails, Python, PostgreSQL, and AWS with an understanding of highly regulated technology environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership & Architecture: Define long-term technical direction and architectural roadmaps for B2B and consumer-facing platforms. Drive decisions involving service architecture, API design, database schemas, integrations, and data pipelines.
- Engineering Excellence & Code Quality: Lead by example through the development of clean, optimized, maintainable code for critical system components. Establish engineering standards, champion rigorous code reviews, and promote modern testing practices.
- System Scalability & Performance: Own the reliability and performance of core platforms. Diagnose and resolve complex systemic issues, optimize demanding PostgreSQL workloads, and architect high-throughput infrastructure within AWS.
- Cross-Squad Technical Leadership: Act as a technical consultant and mentor to engineers across multiple squads. Break down ambiguous, large-scale technical challenges into actionable execution phases that engineers at varying levels can successfully deliver.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Product, Operations, and Engineering leadership to evaluate technical feasibility, de-risk complex initiatives, and align technology decisions with business objectives.
- Security & Compliance: Architect systems with privacy and security by design. Ensure applications, infrastructure, and data-handling practices meet applicable regulatory, security, and compliance requirements for sensitive information.
- Innovation & R&D: Evaluate emerging technologies, frameworks, and architectural patterns. Build prototypes and proofs of concept to validate approaches and reduce technical risk before broader implementation.
Required Experience & Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Technical Experience: 8+ years of progressive software engineering experience, including 3+ years operating as a Tech Lead, Architect, Staff Engineer, or similar technical leadership role.
- Tools & Technology: Expert-level mastery of at least one core language, such as Ruby/Rails or Python, with strong proficiency in PostgreSQL, TypeScript/JavaScript, and AWS cloud infrastructure.
- System Design Expertise: Proven experience designing, building, and scaling high-volume API-driven transactional or operational platforms.
- Communication & Influence: Exceptional ability to communicate complex architectural trade-offs to both technical engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
- Work Schedule: Standard business hours, with availability for critical technical escalation support when required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Education: Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline.
- Industry Experience: Prior engineering experience in healthcare technology, regulated technology, financial technology, or another highly regulated environment.
- Interoperability & Integrations: Experience working with complex data standards, enterprise integrations, healthcare-related systems, or similarly sophisticated external platforms.
- Measurable Impact: Demonstrated success leading major architecture modernization initiatives, such as service decomposition, legacy-system modernization, database migrations, or infrastructure transformations, while maintaining high availability.
